After years of slogging away in the dark, I’ve finally made it into the official ranks of the Horror Writers Association (HWA) as an Affiliate member. While my friends and family all needed to be told what exactly it is, that yes, it IS a big deal, and that no, it’s NOT some scam organisation, I’m hoping anyone who follows my blog will have heard of it and fully appreciate what this means!
Well, just in case.
The HWA was formed in 1985 and it works to promote horror and dark fantasy works, support its creators, and generally keep the beautiful dead things alive and kicking in all possible areas, in all possible ways. The HWA sponsors the annual Bram Stoker Awards, which recognises superior achievement in the genre (which makes it essentially the Oscars of the horror lit world). They host epic conventions. Stephen King and Jack Ketchum are both Grand Masters. And getting my Affiliate membership brings me just that little bit closer to a place up among the stars. Or, down in the depths. Or, whatever. You get it. This is a big dream of mine finally realised.
While, as a writer, I will still be slogging away in the dark (it’s okay. I like the dark. And I sometimes like slogging), HWA is there to offer a hand–which will hopefully make that place a lot more productive and interactive than it otherwise would be. And let’s face it, no matter who you are, it’s good to have a hand to hold in the dark.
